PLAYWRIGHT/DIRECTOR
I enjoy the writing process itself. If the subject matter is not my area of expertise, I look forward to the research involved and delight in making new discoveries about those previously unknown areas. What I prize most is the freedom to create my own artistic destiny: to take risks and to write what I am passionate about without having to worry about the future commercial life of the play. What inspires me most are the stories of people trying to live their lives, often under extremely negative or extraordinary circumstances: sometimes succeeding and sometimes not. Theater should enlighten us as well as entertain. When the first draft is finished and ready to be heard, I am ecstatic because what I truly relish is the collaborative nature of playwriting and the challenges one encounters while bringing the page to the stage. I do appreciate the many opportunities I have had to address both my artistic and professional challenges. Whether I am wearing my playwright, actor, or director hat, I always look forward to creating exciting new work and presenting it within a rigorous and nurturing environment. - Sam Affoumado
